LOCH NESS 21 Miles

Monster the Loch is the first mass participation boat race on Loch Ness. All human powered boat types are invited to race, but as the weather and the Monster can be unpredictable the boats must be sea worthy.

The Loch is 21 miles long, 1 mile wide and who knows how deep!!

In 2019 we saw 52 boats of all shapes and sizes line up side by side on the start line ready to taken on Nessie!

The crews ranged from Pedalo's and self built boats to international rowers and kayakers.

The race will be run with the wind, the course will run from Dores or Fort Augustus. If you are looking for a challenge, but 21 miles is too far then you can team up and change at Foyers Campsite (roughly halfway).

The conditions this year were fast with a good tailwind from start to finish.

The Great British 8+ clocked a time of 2hrs 4mins and 57sec this broke the previous record by 22 minutes, we also had a 2 man Sea kayak and Coastal quad that also surpassed the previous record! The pedalos came in last with a respectable 7hrs 19mins 35sec.

Frequently asked questions

What is included in the entry price?

Entry price covers all race organisation including start and finish points, timings, and safety cover. All competitors will also win a finishers' T shirt!

Can I enter a pedalo?

Yes, you can enter any human-powered boat!

Can we switch crew members through the race?

Yes, you can race a 'Half Ness' from the start point to Foyers, then change crews to race to the finish! NB: The cost for racing the 'Half Ness' is £30pp.

Why is the start and finish not confirmed until the day before?

We will race with the wind conditions. The prevailing wind is from the West so the expected start would be from Fort Augustus. The race organisers will be in touch with all competitors in the lead up to the race and final confirmation will be the day before.

Will I be able to get back to the start after I finish?

We will endeavour to assist you back to your vehicle but any supporters willing to give lifts are welcome!
